Poster Collection: Day Six…

I lived in Fort Sanders while pretending to attend college at the University of Tennessee in my early twenties. One house I lived in was on the corner of 11th and Laurel. It is no longer there, but at the time it was a 3 story house converted into apartments, mine being the attic. It had sloped ceilings and a claw foot tub and you could climb out on the roof and yell obscenities at passer-bys with relative anonymity. My downstairs neighbor was none other than Rus Harper of Teenage Love and Neowizard fame, so needless to stay there were occasionally very interesting gatherings. On Saturdays the Big Orange wave of Humanity came crushing down on the Fort and our land/slumlord had a very bad habit of selling off our yard as a large parking lot. We were left to find parking the night before and hope our cars were not towed or carried away by gangs of hooligans.

Anywho, we had us a fine party this particular home game Saturday and were whooping it up on the front porch, hollering rather inappropriate things to pedestrians and their wives and their (sorry)children. After a threat of violence or two the party logically migrated upstairs to the attic and out onto the roof. I was always a little scared to go out there but braved it anyway. We looked down upon the sea of cars littering our normal hang out area and decided they were not nearly orange enough. So. After a short lived and half-hearted look around, we happened upon the orangest thing we could find: American Cheese. Really cheap American cheese-like food product to be precise, which flies remarkably well and makes a lovely splat when meeting a windshield with all the force the three story cheese free fall could muster. After the supply of cheese bombs was used up, we decided the best thing to do would be to leave for the day and seek comfort in the arms of friends outside of the upcoming impact zone of the horrors of baked on “cheese”.

Here are some posters by the way

Driving in the Smoky Mountains, Townsend Tennessee Style

Long days at work are wearing me down. It makes me want to write like a POW in a bad movie. Food is bad. Mosquitos are vicious. Water is tainted with “Tab” and Prozac. Only recourse is to drive around and do recon. The camera provides coverage from the snipers. I’m just another damn tourist with a straw hat and tacky shorts. white socks and black sandals. a five o’clock shadow and a polyester smile. and maybe every once in a while a gold tooth flashes through the fog, lighting the way for the blind masses yearning to be Fred.

Don’t Ask, just look at the pictures. They are purty.

It’s Alive!!!!

Despite popular rumors and intense wishing on my part, I have not fallen off of the face of the earth. Rather I have fallen in to an endless cycle of work, try to stay awake for a few hours, sleep, then repeat. My days off have been few and far between, much like the teeth of a wayward Irishman, but i digress into racial stereotypes based upon the nationality of my wife’s first and now ex-husband. As you may or may not know, I cook for a living as well as for fun and sustenance, and nothing will ruin your appetite and desire to be all “cheffy” as much as cranking out food morning, noon and night. I have eaten one complete meal in the last few weeks, and it was on my birthday, so I had to sit down and eat. When I am this busy in the kitchen at work , my normal grub is a plain sandwich or some kind of or a bite or two or the kid’s leftovers, or, even better, ANYTHING that SOMEONE else has cooked. I don’t care what or where it came from, as long as I didn’t have to make it, I’ll eat it and like it or shut the hell up.

Sooooooooooooooooo, anywho. Here are some pictures I took today while on my break at work. The drive to and fro is probably one of the best benefits I get from my employment. That and a sore back.

Green Acres is the Place to Be

Me and the Familyishungry took a quick trip out to Green Acres flea market today. It was actually pretty dead, due to the cold I imagine, but still had plenty to look at, as well as a chance to grab some fantastic tacos al pastor. The food stands/ restaurants were lively despite the chill and the whole place exudes a lively street fair atmosphere. If you’re ever cruising down Alcoa Hwy on a weekend, stop in for some grub and bargains and lots and lots of cowboy boots. There is always new stuff to see there, and i will update my Green Acres adventures from time to time

The World Famous Roadside Cafe

This is the World Famous Roadside Cafe and it is possibly one of the finer BBQ joints i have encountered. It is on state highway 70 in Roane County and is unassuming, to say the least. The parking lot is usually full, and parking can be confusing. The place is for 21 years and over, which means you can smoke while you eat, or eat while you smoke. I do not smoke, for the record, but i do like eating in a place void of Teenagers and children. When you walk in the door you instantly feel like a bit of an outsider and the bar has been populated with the same fellows every time i have visited. It is, to be honest, not the most welcoming place. It took a handful of drive-bys to gather the gumption to go in and I would not recommend sitting at the bar unless invited, which has not happened to me yet. I do recommend eavesdropping on the waves of conversation wafting from the regulars at the bar. They talk of local politics and sports, national politics and sports, and then some more politics and sports, plus a smattering of gossip and flirtatious comments aimed at the very attractive bartender. Above the bar is either sports or Fox news on the big screen, both of which are easy to turn into background chatter. The place is small, sitting maybe 25 people, including the seats at the exclusive bar. Prices are very reasonable with my pork sandwich with beans and a pint of Sammy Adams being only 8 bucks and change. The portions are large without being absurd. The beans are unbelievable and are what really drew me into this place. They are spicy with a touch of sweetness, chunks of peppers and onions and big hunks of spicy Italian sausage, all in a nice sauce, not to thick or tomatoey. I have tried the ribs, which are wonderfully smoked, then grilled to serve with their house-made BBQ sauce. They also make some BBQ nachos, Frito pies, homemade chili, great looking burgers, etc etc etc. Simple menu, not too pricey and well made. What more could you ask for, really? This place has become my favorite place to fuel up for a round of disc golf at Roane County Park, and is really a nice slice of the local flavors, both
