Random Photos and Thoughts

Hi folks…sorry I have been AWOL from the blogosphere. Work has been waaay to “work” lately. The new cheffin’ gig is going well, but the Country Club in question is going to the auction block in 6 days, so I may well be looking for employment. I’ve got nothing but good feed back from the menu and the specials, and i rally hope my new Golf Club Overlords decide to keep the status quo …anywho…here’s some pictures: look at them and tell me how cool they and/or I am! ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Photographs…not the Def Leppard song, though, sorry

Ok, I know the song is actually Photograph, singular not plural with the s. Deal with it. That’s how I roll.

Anyway, I got a new phone that does coooool things like take pictures and keep me organized and let’s me play scrabble while driving down I-40 at 85 miles per hour. So look with your eyeholes and leave comments with your fleshy letter poking hand sticks

Southland Dinner is in the Books

Well we pulled it off. The dinner last night at Southland Books in Maryville, Tennessee was a success. It went smoother than our first attempt, we had a good crowd, and everyone seemed to leave happy, or at the very least the were nice enough to keep any whining to themselves. I started cooking my buns off around 9 in the morning, and finally hung it up around 10:30 with the occasional sanity saving game on Mario Kart on the Wii. I don’t know why, but nothing relaxes me more than playing Mario Kart and listening to the news on NPR which probably means I’m some kind of left wing, stimulation hound who can only block out the raging voices in his head by replacing them with computerized squawks and beeps and droning politicos waxing poetic in his ear. Or something like that. The only bad note is I woke up feeling a little puny, as they say around here, so I am going to head back to the bed and let the immune system do its thing, cause I have a long weekend ahead of me. I did manage to click a few pics this time, but most of them were blurry and awful but I picked out a couple that y’all might take a liking to.

Green Acres is the Place to Be

Me and the Familyishungry took a quick trip out to Green Acres flea market today. It was actually pretty dead, due to the cold I imagine, but still had plenty to look at, as well as a chance to grab some fantastic tacos al pastor. The food stands/ restaurants were lively despite the chill and the whole place exudes a lively street fair atmosphere. If you’re ever cruising down Alcoa Hwy on a weekend, stop in for some grub and bargains and lots and lots of cowboy boots. There is always new stuff to see there, and i will update my Green Acres adventures from time to time

Simple Lunch for a Simple Mind

For lunch today, I whipped up some steak fajita tacos for the Missus. Nothing special, just what you would expect in a taco.  I keep being amazed how good simple food can be! If you use quality ingredients, the most mundane dishes can become sublime. My good friend and BBQ trekking companion, Garyishungry, recently recounted a tale of his encounter with the theory of simple elegance in the form of a BLT.  He told of how he had decided to try a BLT from a small food vendor at the local farmers market, somehow passing up a BBQ stand. Freakin’ infidel! Anyway, he had to wait for about 10 minutes for his sandwich, and he is not known as Garyispatient. However, upon receiving and scarfing the sandwich down, he realized why he had to wait so long. The bacon was hot and cooked perfectly, and happened to be world renowned Benton’s Bacon from right here in East TN, just down the road on hwy 411. The tomatoes were freshly sliced and locally grown Grainger county tomatoes, which if you ain’t has a Grainger county tomato, then you haven’t had a real tomato. The lettuce was also local, but how excited can one get about lettuce, except maybe a tad flushed at the sound of a crisp crunch. The bread had been baked that morning, and the mayo was homemade using local eggs and quality oil. He knows all this because he felt compelled to compliment the vendor and inquire more about them. A 5 ingredient sandwich made a loyal customer out of Garyishungry and may have even forced him to chill out a little bit about having to wait. Dammit , now i really want some Benton’s bacon!!!

Green Acres Tacos

TN flea market style

so two tacos walk into a barrio

if you have not visited Green Acres Flea Market on Alcoa Highway lately, you are missing out on a unique local dining experience…there are at least 5 and up to 10 authentic Mexican eateries, ranging from sit down-waitress having-live mariachi band playing- restaurants to a couple-of-dudes-with-a-grill kind of taco stands…prices range from a buck a taco to 3 bucks a piece..i think i have been overcharged since i am a gringo, but i may just be paranoid…I’ve seen ceviche, shrimp cocktail, tripe, tongue, cachete( cheek), plus all kinds of aqua frescas, fruit salads, granitas, etc, etc…the whole vibe at the flea market is surreal…old time redneck trash vendors rub elbows with Latin produce stands, of which there are at least 4 each week…as i write this i realize the futility of trying to describe it all with words and the need for a trip to Green Acres with my camera and 20 bucks of taco cash…not sure if this weekend, being i have to work and its the last one before Christmas and my wife is hosting a benefit concert,  will prove to be an opportune time to explore the pork and cilantro laden realm of outer Alcoa, but i will make it a priority
